‘What the hell is that?’ Jack’s head turns in all directions, his impressive intake of Rioja nullifying his ability to pinpoint from which of the six windows in the dining hall the banging emanates.

Caroline screams as a face presses against the glass pane closest to her. ‘Jack! Get your gun.’

Despite the dark, and the glass-contorted features, I know exactly who it is and race over to open the window. ‘It’s okay, it’s Garth, my mate.’

Garth clambers through, dusts himself off, then grins and nods at each of us as though it’s a perfectly normal entrance. ‘What you all having?’ he says calmly, pointing at the half-finished plates. The blood dripping from his hand raises more imperative questions.

‘What the hell happened to you?’ I ask.

‘I, erm… had a little falling out with something.’

Grace comes over and starts dabbing at his hand with her napkin.

‘Excuse me, that’s French linen!’ shouts Caroline.

Jack sits with an inane smile on his face and a bulbous glass of red cradled in his hand. ‘I’m curious, Gareth, how did you get through the gates?’

‘It’s Garth. Without the E. Had to give those up years ago.’ He laughs loudly until he realises nobody else gets it.

‘Caroline, have you got any bandages? These cuts are quite deep,’ says Grace, still nursing Garth’s hand wounds.

‘You want me to fetch a first-aid kit for the burglar?’

Garth holds his hands up in protest. ‘No, really, I’m okay. I just need to have a word with Justin, that’s all, then I’ll be gone.’

‘Not at all,’ says Jack. ‘You’re a friend of Justin’s, so you’re a friend of ours,’ he slurs. ‘Come, sit.’ He pats an imaginary chair beside him.

‘Oh, for God’s sake,’ shouts Caroline throwing her napkin on the table as she gets up.

‘Very kind. Don’t mind if I do,’ says Garth. ‘Only had a bag of Wotsits all day.’

I throw him an angry glance. ‘What the hell are you doing here?’

He winks conspiratorially. ‘You forgot something.’
